They could have set up the portal the night before and he portalled back. He had plenty to do it having to go to 5 different locations in the least.

I think they only needed the portal to return to their future timeline. The movie established this by showing Tony and Cap go back to the 70s when they were in 2012. So Cap could have lived his life to a time past Tony's funeral then use his time travel bracelet to go back in time to his original timeline.
