You haven't put anything "in" - those are insurance premiums. I'm sorry it was sold to you with misleading language, but it is what it is.
It is an insurance program from top to bottom. It is NOT a retirement plan or an investment program. It is just wholly unfortunate that folks think of it that way and even plan for retirement that way.
And, yes, it is a mandatory insurance program (like Obamacare) that is enforced by the government at the figurative point of a gun.
