So while he still is his normal self...I want his last days to be full of things he loves.

Sorry to hear, I know it far too well (twice in the last 5 years).

My only regret was not giving them the shitty food they loved (and the steak I promised) and just said frick it all with their diet. My first dog went from super healthy to sick in a span of a few hours where she looked tired, but was still eating and drinking okay, didn't have any incontinence. I checked on her every hour and passed away in the middle of the night when I fell asleep.

My other dog left me pretty unexpectedly as well, some "signs" but the last day was a drastic decline like the previous. He went from running around the back yard and doing his business to 12 hours later not being able to stand up to drink from his bowl. I had to put him down maybe 24 hours after that.

If I could have one day and know the day I pick for him to go, I would start early, let him do the things he likes to do and end it with him in bed full of steak (because he loved it). Then bring him to the vet the next morning.
