I don’t remember if this particular situation is because of this, but the literature about the backstory behind the gospels is fascinating. In short, different sects in the early church were rather antagonistic towards one another and tended to deemphasize the namesakes of the version of the gospel their “opponents” preferred. I’ve read authors who believe the story of Doubting Thomas was fabricated from whole cloth in order to discredit the sect following the gospel of Thomas.
