Probably had something to do with the fact that the cathedral is twice the age of the oldest inhabited structures in the United States.

It is extremely common, and sometimes mandated by safety codes for very old historic structures to be reto-fitted with sprinkler systems, and other systems tyupes of fire protection for the safety of the public, and the protection of the building. There is nothing about this building that would have prevented that, it could have easily been down without intruding on the beauty of the building.
