Is this solely for gaming?

Not entirely. I'm also going to be doing some encoding and having at least 1 VM running fairly often, hence the extra memory.
Also going to be seeding a lot, which is why I have the large HDD for now. Eventually I'll put a RAID in there if I don't build a server.

Sounds like you'll be doing some Plex. They've been having some really good 2700/b470 combo deals recently. I would recommend that over the 2700x since I don't know if you want to deal with OCing and higher power costs on a 24/7 machine
Edit: also know you'll be limited to only solo player games since most anti cheat clients block people running on VMs

Yeah, definitely going to be using Plex.
I picked the higher end board due to it being more ready for Ryzen 3000 down the road. I'll probably use the 2700 for quite a while until the prices on the 3000's drop a bit or they have some good sales.
I think I'm going to start the process of learning to OC stuff as well.
I primarily play single player only anyway, but I won't be playing games on the VM. It's for something else entirely.
Thank you for thoughts. Do mine make sense?

How do you plan on doing this? Using a linux distro as your main OS and then running containers? Windows 10 and Hyper-V?
I never liked running windows 10 and hyper v as my hypervisor. I always prefer ESXi or Proxmox or as a last resort linux and dockers
Posted on 4/8/19 at 7:50 am to bluebarracuda
Much simpler than that. Just using VirtualBox and running it when I need it going. It won't be on all the time. The main OS will be Windows 10 LTSB.

Very nice. Drivers can be a bitch with this though, watch out. I deployed it over windows 10 pro at my previous job and it can be quirky sometimes, but I loved how light it is compared to typical windows 10

I never had an issue using it on my laptop. I think the new one is 2019 LTSC. They changed the name for some reason. I'll be having to install all my drivers anyway, right?
Posted on 4/8/19 at 10:03 am to EarlyCuyler3
The 2700x seems expensive. Is it really that much right now?
Don't know much about MSI coolers but Noctua are great.
Why A Vega card? Why not something like a RTX?

It's probably been a year since I've worked with it, so it might be better. I just know that since it's such a stripped down version of windows, some drivers just don't work as well as plain windows 10 pro/home/etc. Like intel graphic drivers were fricking stupid sometimes

I've been pleased with it.
So does the build look pretty good then? I'm pleased with, think I finally found the video card and combination of parts that I like.

I would still go with a 2700 and mobo combo like this one for the same price as that 2700x
and I'm not a huge fan of the Vega 56 choice since the 1660 and 1660 ti are probably cheaper

I'd aim for something like this
Will be more efficient and quieter than the build you posted, probably with a little more power due to the 1660 ti

I would recommend going with a faster spinning drive or a smaller (than 6 TB) ssd, if necessary. That 5400rpm drive is going to be a bottleneck for most anything you do with it, IMHO.
Posted on 4/8/19 at 1:52 pm to bluebarracuda
That build is probably gonna be like 500 cheaper too. I think his build before didn't have prices for a few things.

It'll likely be a mass storage drive for Plex, so speed doesn't make all too much of a difference
Posted on 4/8/19 at 2:41 pm to bluebarracuda
Yeah, it's for mass storage so no big deal. You sure the 2060 is better? I've been reading the Vega can hold it's own with and and do better if you flash the 64 bios.
So can I overclock the 2700 and reach the same as the 2700x?

Maybe throw in a beefier cooler and I've seen people on reddit claim they hit 3.9-4.0

How about this incorporating some of your ideas?
That would knock the total price down to 1354.61 with the Vega included.
Vega56 vs 1060ti
That's what I'm basing that off of, plus I'm kind of getting into the AMD/MSI theme on this thing for whatever reason.
The old build comes to 1658.42, so that would save me $303.81.
ETA: The motherboard. I really wanted the B450 Pro Carbon to begin with, however it is never in stock anywhere. I figure to pay a little more now on that part but will be able to use it again for much longer down the road if I upgrade to the 3000. As lame as it might seem, the aesthetics of the pro carbon looks a lot better. That other board is just too much looks-wise.
