He's not a standup, but he's a good comedic actor. I think he works best in supporting roles, as he really brings a little too much as the lead. He's good in smaller doses.
Look at his best work: Freaks and Geeks, 40 Year Old Virgin, Monsters vs. aliens (screw y'all... I have kids, and this is funny as hell). He's great in those supporting roles. He also doesn't get enough credit in being willing to go pretty f'n dark: Observe and Report, This is the End, etc. He doesn't have the compulsive need to be liked.
Which is good, because the roles which require him to be the likeable leading man? They don't work. OK, maybe except Knocked Up.
