Something to keep in mind for anyone building an elevated house.

I built one a few years ago and included an entry closet that has the required dimensions to be an elevator room. And the floor is framed for an elevator opening, and over a convenient spot in the driveway under the house. Makes it a lot easier if I ever need to put an elevator in.

I only popped in because I was reading this thread and became curious...

I'm not from the gulf shore and haven't seen those outdoor elevators before. Is there a manual ascend/descend mechanism that can be engaged in case of power outage? Seems that would be absolutely critical in the event of a blackout due to natural disaster?

Again, only curious, as this is something I'd definitely think about if I were installing this for my Mom. OP, you are awesome for what you're doing

Legacy Lifts might be an option. I had them install an outside elevator at my camp, and it has worked well.

I don’t have any elevator advice but I wanted to say what you are doing is awesome.
It’s a hard road but being able to be there & care for a family member is everything.
Good luck to you & your family.

We have one made by elevette. Was put in when the house was built. It wasn’t cheap and I can only image it would be exponentially more expensive after the fact. I can recommend champagne elevators out of the NO area. They service ours and would probably know some builders who have experience and or could give you some ballpark prices.

You could potentially use the stair lift mechanism and have someone fab up a ramp which allows for loading and unloading of a wheel chair (similar to a handicap van)

Quick google search shows this already exists LINK

TBH I didn't even realize the home/garden board had been added.

Still would've posted it here first anyway. Knew I could count on the OB.

Where are you located?

We used Alabama Accessibility years ago to put in an elevator at Talladega for one of the suites.

They were good to work with

It seems you’ve already gotten some good advice and contacts in this thread, but I wanted to just say good on you for doing what you’re doing.

Also, if you have any friends that have camps along the coast, check with them. Lots of camps in the Mobile Bay area have elevator lifts for moving bigger stuff up to the main dwelling without having to use the stairs. Same with a lot of camps here in southeast LA. I’d bet those contractors are pretty easy to find around Mobile, and you could probably find some reviews on home advisor or some Alabama fishing-related message board.

You could also try Bagby Elevator....they are one of our customers HQ'd in Birmingham but have locations from Florence to Gulf Shores.

Depending on how elaborate you want to get you could go with something like a PLM hoist and try HEK or Fraco or any other construction hoist companies. Maybe even Betamax.

There are tons of options depending on the budget. 15k, 25k or 50k

I'll help you in any way possible....seems like something great you are doing.

Recommend this group too. Didn’t realize they were all over the state. They service many of the high rise elevators in our building at work. Professional staff that takes care of things quickly. Bagby’s daughter is on my daughters soccer team. Just met them in passing but seems like a great guy.

I had an outdoor elevator put in when I built my house. I used Remi elevators. they came in and install the elevator but my carpenter built the shaft and frame on the outside of my house.
