I've lived around the southeast as well and seen Huntsville go from last resort for Engineers in this area to something more tolerable.
It's not as fantastic as you make it. It's just kind of an average town with average things.
As you said it comes down to the decisions you make and things you want out of life and also a lot of bias you harbor for certain areas. I wouldn't go back to Louisiana by choice, no way you will get me in Alabama by choice either though.

This is proof you're an idiot. The best engineering jobs in the southeast, and arguably the country are in Huntsville. Engineers last resort is working for NASA, Department of Defense, etc.? K!
