So, yesterday I got a bill for $25 from my child's pediatrician. Which is odd, because whenever we go, we pay a $25 co-pay. The date of service is June 7th, which is almost 10 months ago. According to the bill, Blue Cross made their portion of the payment on January 9th, 7 months after the visit and almost 3 months ago from now.
I checked my bank records, no record of making a payment around June 7th. Wife is going to check her records today. In no way do I remember taking the kid to the doctor 10 months ago.
I'm sure we took her and I guess something happened and for some reason they didn't collect payment and we owe it, but maaan there has to be a better way.

That's the feeling everyone seems to have after going through the process.
And from what I understand, all medical bills are negotiable. You can call and make them an offer and they might accept. It seems they bill an outrageous amount even though they know most either don't pay or will pay less than that, so they have to start the bill higher with the expectation that it will get negotiated down. My response to that is why don't you just bill reasonable amounts to begin with so all your patients don't feel like they're getting screwed, then maybe we won't have this stupid charade.
And of course it doesn't help when you don't see a bill until a year later when you can't even remember the appointment well enough to dispute any charges.
