I’m so sorry for your loss. My husband and I had three dogs. We had to put the Boxer/hound mix he got in college from the BR pound down in 2016. It was very hard but it was time he was almost 16 and and struggled to get up and down. I recently lost my yorkie that was 15 on 12/20/18. I let her out to pee in the backyard when we got home from work. I went to let her back in and she didn’t come to the door. After looking for her in the backyard we found a fence board by the trashcan that was broken she must have gone through to chase something and we found her hit by a car on the next street. I was devastated. I was trying to prepare myself for the inevitable because she was older but she was a very healthy dog so I assumed I still had time with her. I don’t know what’s harder losing them when you know it’s time or unexpectedly. We still have our lab but the house seems empty and I still tear up when I pass by where we found her. I took her to work with me everyday so it’s hard not to miss her presence. I will say it’s three months later and I find myself wanting another dog because I miss that connection and the lab is closer to my husband unless I put running shoes on.
