We had to put down our 10 year old pup due to cancer last May. We have since got a new dog but my wife still cries, a year later, over the pup we had to put down. I’ll prob get some downvotes for this but losing a dog that you raised in your 20’s is like losing a child.

It is similar because young children and dogs both offer that unconditional and innocent love. However, short of the macabre and horrific, losing a child is the worst thing that can happen to anyone. My college roommate was killed in a wreck along with his three little children (and his wife watched her husband and three kids burn up in the wreck). My roommate was telling the firemen to ignore him and get the kids out, but there was nothing they could do. That was a terrible experience for me and I wasn't the parent.
