spending $8-10k on a hobby like that (when there are other options for drastically less) is insane unless he's making 1% income

My step-daughter is starting her 3rd and last year of AAU basketball. She plays on a very good Nike affiliate team. We spend around $4000 to $5000 each year. She committed to a P5 school last week, so it worked out for us. The 12 to 15k we spent wouldn’t pay for one semester of tuition, books, room & board where she is going. Plus they pay her $6000 a year in cost of attendance money. I understand mutual funds and there ain’t one out there that will give me that return.
