Why should we care about that?
Someone is getting boned either way why should it people people living in populated states?

Because it keeps highly concentrated population centers from being the dominant voice of very large areas outside of those population centers. Surely you don't think people in Manhattan have the same attitude or beliefs as someone in Des Moines, right?
