Why is an employee responsible for clerical errors anyway? You are responsible for seeing where your money goes

My company accidentally paid me a sizeable bonus that I wasn't eligible for. I notified them immediately and paid it back.

I get your point, but the employee has to use their common sense at some point.

That’s because you have a career and a future and usually the loss of your job and the hit to your reputation isn’t worth the windfall.

Most companies don’t care about their workers. And so shouldn’t be surprised when their workers aren’t willing to hurt themselves to rectify a mistake by the company through no fault of their own

I think the strategy here depends on if it's a career or just a job. If it's a career, say something right away and pay the company back. Your future, health care, your kids health cars, etc... all depend on it.

But, if Jimmy Johns screws up and pays me $550/hr. Yeah, I'm letting this one slide. Working only a few hours may be a smart approach too - will be able to make it last longer before being caught and fired.
