Never seen hereditary. But I enjoyed A Quiet Place. Didn’t consider it a scary movie though. More of a thriller. Hope that helps.

I liked both. I would say Hereditary is more of a “scary” movie than A Quiet Place

Hereditary is a straight up horror movie whereas A Quiet Place is more a thriller.

I agree. Heredity was a horror movie. I don't really classify A Quiet Place as such. I know people who thought Hereditary was boring and slow, but the build up is what made it so good. One horrible event after another, each one worse than the last.

Wow wow wow. A Quiet Place is definitely a horror movie. A horror movie doesn’t have to be “scary”. It just has to have horrific subject matter. Don’t go trying to rewrite 70 years of horror movie there.

I'm pretty sure that for a film to be truly classified as a horror movie, it has to also be scary. I wasn't scared or even on edge once while watching A Quiet Place. Don't get me wrong, it was a good movie. It was entertaining, but it wasn't scary to me. On the flip side, what the family in Hereditary went through during the course of the movie was absolutely horrifying.

For the audience memember? Nope, not at all. Scary is completely arbitrary. With that mindset, anyone can claim any movie isn’t scary because it didn’t scare them.

To me, a horror movie is a movie that deals with a situation of intense terror.

Horror comedies are the perfect example of this. We the audience laugh at situations the characters feel are horrific.

But these scenes are deliberately played for laughs in a horror comedy. Take the Scream movies for example. They walked the fine line between horror and comedy, although the first two in the series lent themselves more to horror.

That said, to each his own. I preferred Hereditary over A Quiet Place because I thought it was a better overall film, better acted, and the plot, while admittedly a bit slow in the beginning, went into full blown horror in the final act.

SPOILERS:

The thing about Hereditary that disturbed me the most (in a good way) wasn't the gore (those who've seen it will know the scene I'm referring to), it was that all of the horrible things that the family endured were part of the "master plan" all along. They were surrounded by people who were all in on it, but the family didn't realize it until it was too late.

Hereditary was one of the best flicks of 2018. A quiet place was alright.
