2-3 million people hike some part of the Appalachian trail every year, a lot of the trail goes through areas heavily populated by rattlesnakes, and copperheads, there have been 5 snake bites over the last 20 years mostly from reaching under logs, and leaves.

I've had two encounters while turkey hunting that stand out. Once two of us sat down by a tree and a rattler let loose with his tail in the dark (skid marks)

second time I was calling and was seated in some thick grass, felt something on my lap, was a black racer crossing my leg (skid marks)
