She said she'd like to see more than just white men review films targeted at women of color.

Insecure white dudes everywhere lost their shite.

I feel like one has to be looking to clock themselves in victimhood not to see the logic in her comments.

When I was in college I would occasionally read and watch Sikel and Ebert reviews and while I knew if they gave two thumbs up it was likely to be a good movie if somewhat on the literature level but if I went by them I would have never seen Friday. It would have been very useful to me at the time to have had reviewers that aligned with my age and mentality at the time to help sort between the Friday and Friday After Next type movies.

There are plenty of movie critics you could have mentioned and probably been on target but including Roger Ebert in this ends up being wrong IMO. Ebert loved most movies that invoked black american culture in a positive way. He was, not coincidentally, married to a black woman until the day he died.

He wasn't perfect, but his snobbery was more fiercely focused on chuck norris type movies or horror movies (which IMO both he and gene siskel famously misunderstood as forms of misogyny when the protagonists and survivors were typically female).

The most interesting thing about this? You would not have predicted any of those outcomes based on his external demographic as an old fat white man. Not the focus on misogyny distorting his view of a genre ripe with allegorical story telling, not the dislike of most action movies, and not the love of movies like "hoop dreams" and "do the right thing" more than just about anything else he ever reviewed.
