You are actually pretty close to a notion I suggested once...In my take, I would do a series of Bond Films that actually take place In Between the original Bond Films. Do something that took place between Dr. No and From Russia With Love...

The only problem with this is people nowadays will screw up the canon and inject a bunch of SJW horshit rather than the way the times actually were.
