Someone who has a better understanding of baseball contracts explain this to me. Why, in these mega-long term deals, do the players' yearly salaries grow larger with the life of the contract and not the other way around? They're less productive on the back end as the front end and it makes them harder to move later. It seems like even when they are traded, you're still stuck with paying part of their salary. I'm sure there is a logical reason, but I don't see it.

Time value of money. When possible the teams are going to backload the deal, if they can. See Max Scherzer's contract.
