Beautiful Axis. We had a few studs like that on our place but never got a shot on one. Was on top of a cliff and watched 19 axis cross the road leading to our lodge with 2 trophies in front and couldn’t shoot at them because they were close to the ranch owners house and it was designated as a no shoot zone. All of the axis hung out in the no shoot zone. Go figure. Had a bunch penned up in the trees on the side of a ridge multiple times and couldn’t flush them out to get a shot. Hunted that ranch for 12 seasons and never got an Axis. They certainly zone roam as much as whitetail. They do move but not to the range of whitetail. Ranch was in Mountain Home next to Kerrville and Ingram. Love it up there. Still pissed we lost the lease. We had Blackbuck, Auodad, Mouflon, Axis, and Whitetail with the occasional Fallow and Ibex get on the property.

I love hunting in West Texas. I have a lease in Louisiana I will hunt on for the foreseeable future, but my long term goal is to have somewhere in Texas to hunt. It just costs so much more. The terrain and variety of animals in a Texas is just so much more exciting. I shot a free range 11 point a couple of years ago in in the Sonora area and misses him the first time. Was a long shot. He ran over the side of the Mesa and was standing there for another shot when I got over there. Would have never seen that deer again in Louisiana. So I’d say West Texas is a little more forgiving too. lol
