I mean, I feel like the main bad guy was written to be hated to the point that you knew his minions were going to abandon him at some point. He held the purse strings though - and from the opening dialog you could tell they were compensated extremely well. He also wasn't going after all of the retired assassins (just the recently retired ones, look at the old guy that betrayed him), and the company was going to be solvent after "this last one" - so the current assassins weren't going to turn on the punk, all they had to do was this one last mission and they were going to be set for life.

Which brings me to his character - they played him off perfectly, in any other situation the other assassins wouldn't have even flinched at another job to set themselves up for life, even if it's another assassin they are killing. Katheryn's character over and over again saw that the main bad guy's undoing was going to be going after Duncan... but the bad guy still held all of her money, so she was going to do that job. But her feelings came true - and Duncan was their undoing.
