How did the playoffs ruin the Sugar Bowl? I mean if you say it is irrelevant unless it is a semi final game then wouldn't the BCS have ruined it unless it was the championship game?

Same thing with players sitting out bowl games. If a bowl is meaningless because it is not a playoff game, then under the BCS wasn't every bowl expect the championship game irrelevant?

In the playoff era there are, according to y'alls logic, two meaningful bowls. Under the BCS there was only one.

The point is that, with the BCS, expectations were different. Everyone knew that only 2 teams could make it and that you pretty much had to go undefeated to have a guaranteed shot.

Now that the playoffs have expanded the field to 4 teams, it's that much more of a letdown when your team doesn't make it.

Think about when LSU played in the Sugar Bowl in 2001. That was a HUGE deal for the team and the fanbase. Going into the SECCG, they knew they had no shot at the BCSCG, but they laid it all on the line regardless against UT. And then, because it was such an honor to play in the Sugar Bowl, I don't remember Josh Reed or Ryan Clark skipping it to focus on the NFL draft. That would've been unthinkable.

But now, if LSU misses the playoff and plays in the Sugar Bowl, it's more like "meh."

Yes, all the other bowls were still exhibition games in the BCS era, but they were much more respected exhibition games that teams took a lot of pride in playing in.
