My nephews are getting a PS4 for Christmas from my folks. Will they need money to get a play station online subscription? I was thinking about getting them a gift card for that as their gift. Just want to know what they will need to get started.

If they plan on playing multiplayer games online yes they will need a subscription. You can probably find some pretty good year long deals online.

PlayStation Network is free. However, PS+ membership is well worth the $50/yr fee. Not only does it usually grant you more available content in MMO games, but the access to backing up data on the cloud through PS+ is absolutely invaluable.

That's a great gift though. The wife and I were blessed with lots of overtime this fall and are getting my daughter and stepson both their own PS4 1TB consoles. And the wife is upgrading mine, getting me a PS4 Pro... though I'm not supposed to know that yet
