I find it odd that Hurricane Katrina victims cannot relate to this event that just happened to me an hour or 2 ago.

Because it doesn't sound legitimate. Walking from Panama City to Destin takes weeks? No. It's about 56 miles. He could walk from Panama City to Atlanta, his primary destination in a matter of weeks.

You're telling us that with all of the shelters and charitable groups that went down there that this guy couldn't get help getting to Atlanta weeks ago?

3 weeks after Katrina I was gutting the old man’s rental houses, driving all over BFE looking for gas, trying to help siblings move temporarily to Baton Rouge, dealing with insurance companies over destroyed property, and rummaging through what was my house on the Pearl R. I’d moved into 2 weeks prior to the storm, after remodeling it for 2 years.

In other words, frick your $50. That dude can pick himself up by the boot straps and make his life productive again. I don’t know how long ago that storm wiped him out. But after 3 weeks, you’re just starting to finalize your formulated plan and networking with others that need your help (and vice a versa). If he hasn’t made better arrangements by now than hoping to catch a cab to a bus station to head home to Atlanta, what you did won’t really make a difference. He’d have made it there. Think of all the other people he’s scammed for $50.

Tl;dr that dude couldn’t pick you out of lineup tomorrow. Yuh got burned by a junkie.
