Do most people here buy new phones from carriers on these payment plans?

I just can't believe how much people are paying for cell phones. I have ATT and see the notification that I'm eligible for an upgrade. Great!?

Then even if I pick a phone out that I want to pay on for the next 24/30 months, I have to pay them $30 just to "upgrade". What?!

Furthermore, any discount you receive is averaged out over all of these payments. Which means if at any time you want to get another phone or discontinue the service, you don't get the full "discount" and you have to pay off the remaining amount to keep the phone.

I have Cspire in MS. A couple of months ago they had $200 off any phone. I walked in the store and paid $149 for a new Iphone SE. No payments or commitments.

Nope! If you call AT&T customer loyalty dept., they will give you a deal on a new phone if you sign a 2 year contract. You’re current phones cannot be in a contract or on a payment plan and you must be on the unlimited plan. I was able to get 2 IPhone XRs for $299 each ($450 off).

The savings on the phones are being paid for on your bill.

No they aren’t, bill stays the same.

When I'm in the need for a new cell phone I generally select "shopping" in the google search bar and find the phone I'm looking for then have it listed cheapest to most expensive.

I end up saving hundreds of dollars outright buying it and don't get stuck in a rotten plan where the carrier consistently tries to raise my bill for no reason using a contract for a phone purchase over my head.

You should never subsidize your phone through your carrier, it's highway robbery.

I was a 14 year AT&T customer. Only thing I can promise you is your bill from them will never “stay the same”. AT&T is the absolute worst.

What I mean was with this upgrade there is no increase in bill. The contract signed was for the same unlimited plan that I had previously. If I sign a contract, and my bill increases, I believe I have the option to opt out of the contract.

I’ve been with them for about 10 years and the only increase I’ve ever had was a few $5 increases to try and get people off of their old grandfathered unlimited plans.
