Maybe - but the G5 teams make their bones by beating P5 teams. See Boise, UCF, etc. In some cases like Utah and TCU they even move up into P5 conferences. A split would reduce the opportunity to build their brand.
If the playoffs end up expanding to 8 it would make more sense to have the G4 champions do play-in games and the P6 (including the AAC) getting the first 6 spots. Or have the five P5 champs and the best G5 champ get byes and the last four teams pair off for the play in games.
