super. i'm an engineer and I also have hobbies i'm really good at.

You want a trade school, not a university

a major at a university is a "trade school".

quote:

A university education is to prepare you to be a citizen in the world, and presumably a leader in your field and in the culture

I don't disagree, but I didn't need to take those electives to get that preparation. Parents are the ones that should be preparing children to be good citizens.

The only difference between an engineer who never took any electives and the plant baw out there working on a tank is one of them went to school a little longer and sits in an air conditioned office.

The difference between us is I went to a school that taught me how to be a professional, taught me how to research, and how to study a problem and solve it, how to work with others to solve those problems, and how to use what I learned in the books and apply it to real life (Final Project). Going to college to become an engineer isn't just about learning book problems and how to solve them mathematically, it's about training someone on how to approach and think to solve problems.
Engineers ask lots of questions, always wanting to know why. It's been engrained in us through our schooling.

What do you think the arts and humanities teach? If nothing else, it was an area of study outside your comfort zone, which is useful in itself.
