the new characters are far more interesting than almost anyone in original powder mage series, and I like the setting better so far.

That's the main reason I like the second trilogy better than the first. I thought every main POV character was really well done and very interesting in that trilogy. Ben Styke in particular is awesome of the new characters.

And without getting into spoilers I was impressed with how he turned a secondary character I really didn't care for in the first trilogy into an amazing main character in the second trilogy that I really liked. Abercrombie in his sequel novels is the only guy that usually shifts me on characters like that.

I'd agree with Cotton on the first Powder mage, I thought the first solid but not amazing, and it took off in the second book and was really good from there. And I think the second trilogy was great start to finish.

I finished the first powder mage trilogy yesterday and it was phenomenal. From about halfway into the second book until the end it was damn near all I could think about.

Started second trilogy today and I like it so far. And you’re right Ben Styke is fricking awesome

Finished 2nd Powder Mage last night and it did really take off in the 2nd half or really once Taneil got back up to speed - i hit my head and got my bell rung pretty good about 1/3 of the way through so wasn't really able to pick it up again until a few days ago.

Already about 100 pages into the 3rd one, going good so far.
