The reason people spend so much money on weddings is because of the reception. It’s to thank their guests for being a part of their special day.
If a couple would have a ceremony and a cheap reception, you’d come here saying it was trashy.

I had a cheap ceremony and reception, a local JP did the honors and my MIL catered and held the reception at her house. My in-laws gave us a choice, have a big wedding or a down payment on a house. We chose the down payment. Been married now for 25+ years.
