When you dial up the same 4 plays, every single game, the defense knows how to limit your talented players ability.
It's a scheme issue, and ALWAYS has been.
You don't have to like Ensminger, in fact you can hate the man and his offense but anyone that compares his scheme to Miles and Cameron did in the past has no clue about Football and should stay out of this discussion. This year we at least attempted to be balanced and pass more on 1st and/or 2nd down. He also got rid of the dreaded Fullback and double Tight End look that his predecessor tried to run 70% of the time.
Hard to know exactly because the stats don't show how many called pass plays that Joe scrambled on and got positive yards but I would think 2 or 3 times a game which would put the Run to Pass ratio at approx. 53% to 47%.

Talent? Also true. Talent is always welcome and needed.
But besides these two, there is an essential, intangible something that I think eludes so many players and fans. I call it the will to win, or the drive to excellence. Until we "get" it, LSU will see mixed results.
Nick Saban "gets" it and lives it, and instills it in his teams and coaching staff. Three words come to mind - excellence, discipline, process. Here's a couple of his thoughts. Read and learn.
quote:
“recognize certain traits that seem to be in every champion: passion, commitment, confidence, pride in performance, high standards of excellence, relentlessness, perseverance, and the ability to perform in adverse circumstances.”
“There is no continuum for success. Focus on the progress, not the results.”
Excellence. Drive. Will to win. Vince Lombardi "got" it, and made it his signature coaching style and philosophy throughout his storied career. Had a few things to say about it, too.
quote:
Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.
Winners never quit and quitters never win.
It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up.
The spirit, the will to win, and the will to excel are the things that endure.
Maybe lowly, star-less UCF kinda gets this, too. Unbeaten 25 straight, regardless of who they play does suggest more than dumb luck.

Prior to the season, we were inundated with claims of Burreaux being the savior to deliver the team, the depth and talent of the receivers, finally a deep quality OL, and the nation's best OC handpicked by O. Now we hear the excuses, Burreaux needs more time, problematic receivers need more time and better coaching, the OL needs more talent and development time, and SE's antiquated offensive schemes need to be upgraded and developed. It looks to be the same for next year. The recruiting shows some quality incoming players that we won't know for sure about until signing day. Remember last year. It is amazing that top rated teams seem to find incoming players that can step in and play at high levels while LSU's yearly excuse is they need more time. A good staff will make the most of what they have and scheme accordingly. A subpar staff will depend on talent to overcome. When a team has neither, it shows glaringly. Championship teams have both, which also helps in consistent recruiting. I think it's obvious where LSU stands.
