Boat trailer registration

I just got my card and sticker for my boat. For some reason I remember the LDWF lady telling me the trailer is optional. Is this correct? If so, I would assume that means I don’t get a license plate? I always remember having a plate on my trailer. Thanks.

You should have a plate with a sticker just like a car, unless permanent plates which I recommended. And i think its through the DMV instead of WLF.

Ok thanks. Can I do this online or through the mail?

You bought a new boat? Yes, you need to register the trailer at the DMV.
You can quickly get it done at any auto title place. I went to Thibs next to Albertsons in Broussard. Took about 15 minutes. Walked out with a plate.

No, register at DMV or one of the title places. Get the permanent (lifetime) registration.

The guy you bought it from should have signed the title over to you. You take that title (notarized)to the DMV and they will issue you a new title and issue you a license plate.
You did buy this in Louisiana from a Louisiana resident, right?

yeah, Y.E.S warranty until 2021.It is a fun fishing platform for toledo bend. I have a hydraulic jackplate in storage to be installed as soon as I bring the boat back home from the lake. Hopefully this week or next weekend.

The boat out of state transfer is more difficult than the trailer should be.
You’ll have to check on trailer paperwork from that state. Texas doesn’t have ( or didn’t have ) boat trailer titles. They just had registration papers. ( they go through their WLF for boat trailers & LA goes through DMV). You gave dmv the signed registration and bill of sale to get a LA tag and title and registration.
Out of state is really harder than it should be.

From what I can tell TN doesn't register trailers.
Boat trailers are not required to be titled or registered in Tennessee. However, the boat itself must be registered.Aug 30, 2015

I’d think the bill of sale taken to DMV would be all you need. They will gladly take your money and sell you what you need.
Lol.
Lol.

Thanks. I am going to take the advice of NewIberiaHaircut and go to Thibs. I am not messing with the DMV ladies.

DMV and get a lifetime plate. Got to have the title or you’ve got a hassle on your hands. I bought one out of Florida that doesn’t title trailers, royal pain in the arse. I ended up throwing myself at the mercy of Troup A and getting a homemade trailer title after 6 months of bs runaround with motor vehicles

as the others have said, any auto title place.
I use neighborhood title on Drusilla
bring the bill of sale and the manf statement of origin and you’ll walk out with the plate in five minutes after paying the fee and tax
