So here's the scenario I propose to you. You've worked your whole life for a job and you're finally in your senior year of college. The job is there for you. You just have to graduate. The professor gives your study group one last project.
He tells you that you aren't required to do the project, but if you do, and it's bad, you will lose that job. What would you do? Take on a project that can't help you and only possibly hurt you, or take the job?

ok, let's use your example. The other students in the class can opt out of the project too because it will have no impact on their grade either. The difference in your example and the bowl game, is that there aren't thousands of fans waiting to watch your project, there are hundreds of people working around the project who's jobs depend on it, there aren't tv deals based on your project that will have no viewership. Nice try, but totally different.
