Story and pics from my Missouri Hunting Trip

So last week me, my dad 2 friends made a trip to missouri to hunt deer. This was not some trophy outfitter or anything. Just a little land owner that let us hunt his 500acres for 5 days. Hunt wasnt but $500 so we definitely wasnt expecting to kill trophy deer. We just wanted to have a guys trip and enjoy time away. On the ride up (from south MS) we got in a fricking winter storm about arkansas line. What should have been an 8hr ride took almost 11hrs. We were in 4wheel drive the last 3 hrs and doing 15-25mph. Roads were terrible, and pulling a trailer with a 3000lb ranger on the back was very scary. We almost lost it on a bridge once, and somehow got it back straight. But once we made it, it was awesome... a winter wonderland. Pics below show the ride going in, pics from front porch of our cabin as well as from living room of our cabin. Awesome views.
Now about the hunt.. it was TOUGH. Thick woods that was full of acorns and big bucks locked down with does. On the 1st morning i found a scrape line of 5 scrapes and a huge acorn tree dropping, and set up there. Saw a doe. Went back the evening, doe again. 2nd day i decided to go back.. does again both hunts. 3rd morning i decided to give the spot one more go since the snow was melting. I sit there all morning and didnt see anything and had decided i was moving spots that evening. Then at 8:15 i saw a big body cruising through the other side of the woods and scoped it and saw horns.. followed him down the ridge and across road i came in on for 10mins striaght and never could get a clean shot. Was so depressed, but knew i didnt spook him so i knew i would be back that evening. Went back extra early at 1:30 to try and catch him comming back through. Then at 4pm on the dot, i heard leaves and turnd arund and he was cruising through, had already snuck up on me at 10yds.. I closed the deal with a heart shot from the 6.5 creedmore. No monster, but such an amazing/rewarding hunt. Had a blast.

Awesome, except for the drive up. What area/county of MO? I have opportunities up there that I plan to pull the trigger on here eventually. No areas that would hold monster deer unfortunately, but it's going to be with old buddies who will be having their first hunting experience.

So awesome. Snow hunt is on my list, can't believe I haven't made one yet.

I used to live in the suburbs of St. Louis. The only thing I really think about related to snow is the lack of sound while it's falling. I remember being out in several nice snow storms and the muffled sound during a snowfall really stuck with me for some reason.
5th snowfall this year for them, very odd for that area.

Thanks... i was VERY happy with him. I just made sure to put the disclosure (no monster buck) because some people think just because you go out of state you are supposed to kill 160" deer. I was very pleased with my kill.. and honestly n my top 2 bucks to date.

I don't blame you. You went to a property you've never been on and busted a good buck.

Nice buck! For some reason, by your posts i figured you were an old guy lol
How do you find a land owner that'll let you hunt like that? Is it through connections or find online?

lol.. craigslist serious. Just have to do your homework. We have previously hunted 1000acres in western KY for last 6 years. 5 days, camp included.. $800. We did really well there. Brought home 6 buck and 4 doe last yr. Every yr we would get at least 4 bucks (6 hunters). But the guy sold the land, so i had to find somewhere diffrent. Found Kentucky place on craigs also.

I’ve lived and hunted in Iowa my whole life and never killed a 160” deer. That’s a great buck. Congratulations.

WHAT? I thought 160 was minimum for deer in iowa.

My biggest ever is 150” class. Just saying that it’s not as prevalent as most people like to think.

and fyi.. im not trying to make the buck look bigger in the pic or me holding him. I was alone (everyone else was still hunting), and trying to get some pics in the leaves and all before it got dark. So i was setting timer on the phone, proping it up on tree stumps and running around to get the pic think i did a 30min photo op before i got some decent ones

oh absolutely.. i was being sarcastic. Its still hunting no matter what (unless pen hunting) Just because there are 160" deer there, it dont mesn you will kill them. They dont get that big for no reason. And its especially hard on hunts like this that are non guided. Just meet the land owner and he says here is a map.. have fun!

Congrats. Sounds like a good hunt. The cabin was worth the price.

Enjoyed story and pics. I enjoy being a sportsman and living in Missouri but one of the things I hate is that their modern gun deer season only lasts 10 days.
