There is a Hilton Garden Inn across the East River in Long Island City, Queens. I have stayed there several times when I didn’t want to pay Manhattan prices. It is only a few years old and located 1/2 block from the Queens Plaza subway station where you can take the E train and be in Manhattan in 10 minutes. Check your dates on the Hilton site. I’m thinking it would be less than $200/night during most of December.
You can access this hotel easily from JFK (Airtrain from terminal to Jamaica where you connect with NYC subway and take E to Queens Plaza) and LGA (Laguardia Link bus to Jackson Heights/Roosevelt Ave Station and take E to Queens Plaza). Using the subway for airport transfers saves a ton of money. Newark is a different story.
