The first Half Life is like Shakespeare. I can appreciate the contributions it made to it's entertainment medium, but so much has been taken from it at this point that playing it for the first time feels extremely derivative.

Yes mechanics are found everywhere in gaming today but the experience of fighting your way to the surface out of Black Mesa is very much unique.

HL1 = The Mist
HL2 = 1984

I love the common thread of hopelessness in the series. The sense of whatever you have done or will ever do means nothing. The game is extremely dark in it's portrayal of despair.
