Who gives a shite? Let's assume the stat is accurate. The better question would be how many owners die from a gun just simply laying on a table or in a drawer from an accidental discharge WITHOUT human interaction? For instance, if I an idiot cleaning my gun while it's loaded and it fires is it the gun's fault or the human's fault? Or, if I shoot my friend because I'm playing with what I thought was an unloaded gun, whose fault is that?
I own 3 guns. In 30+ years not a single one has EVER just spontaneously fired without human interaction.

The stat smells like something that somebody made up and published. Then the unverified published assertion just keeps getting repeated.
It's like '1 out of every 3 college girls will get raped' or '1 out of every 6 children in America are starving'.
