I'm not a parent, so my opinion on that matter might not be as valid, but if it was a nice resort, and they were 150 feet from the building that the children were in, and they could see the building, then I don't think that them leaving them there is that unreasonable.
I couldn't really tell from the wiki page whether or not they had a view of the house though. I know the OP said that it wasn't in view, but the article makes it seem like they had an elevated view.
Also, from the article, it seems like the whole swingers/sedative angle came from unfounded rumors.
