I was getting this in my heavy squat sets. I started wearing neoprene knee sleeves (Rehband) and warming up for 3-4 minutes on the air bike before beginning a leg workout and it seems to help a lot. I can't say I never feel it but I can usually push through it.

If you are pushing through any pain you are likely doing further damage you will pay for worse eventually. You guys likely have weak or fatigued glutes or have a muscular imbalance where the lateral quads are much stronger and more active than the medial portion. You need to correct this or it will only get worse.
