You can use deadly force to protect life, not property.
Some jurisdictions require retreat, the requirements of which vary by jurisdiction.
In short, if someone is breaking your door down then yes, you can use deadly force in some jurisdictions but not all. Seriously, your question is one that criminal law professors like to put on exams.

Here's how it stands in Florida's Stand Your Ground Law:
Florida Statute 776.013 says that you may defend your home or occupied vehicle from anyone trying to unlawfully gain access or entry to it by use of deadly force. Should this kind of incidence occur, you do not need to retreat or fire a warning shot to scare the intruder.

The fact that you can only do this in some jurisdictions is perhaps the clearest endorsement of cultural revolution style tactics I have ever heard. The left has educated itself into imbilicity.
