Why not just have first/business and 'elite' level passengers board last while protecting their overhead carryon space. Have a mini club at the boarding area serving drinks and the like. Once the peons have boarded, then you can have the higher priority board and plane take off. I won't be offended if I'm the last on the plane as long as my overhead isn't taken.

Instead of letting the rulebreakers/linejumpers get on the plane, you make them get ON the plane. If they can hang on to the next destination, then you allow them another chance to get on the plane like a human being.

I'd be fine with it if they prohibited those in the cheap seats from carrying on. You don't want your loyal elite status customers having to check bags.
