I agree with the soundbite, though.

The absence of religion in societies where technology, art, culture, government, social movements etc. have been intertwined with religion creates a vacuum.

I think people feel/will feel that void, religious or not. And I think they'll notice when deeply held beliefs that played a role in hundreds of years of human advancement are replaced with platitudes.

Again, it depends on what exactly he meant by it which is why I called it a soundbite. The statement by itself is too open-ended.
