Pretty much every MLS fan I know isn't happy with the playoff format. It takes way too long and the awkward international break right in the middle really makes it lose steam and importance right when the quality really picks up. It doesn't feel as epic as it should.
As much as I love the two-legged format, I think it takes way too long for a league playoff format like this. It works for the Champions League and Europa League because that tournament is spread out over months, but the MLS playoffs can't be like that. I would make MLS Cup the first Saturday after the international break ends. The other rounds should be single games (hosted by the higher seed) played only on weekends. It's bad for the league to have playoff games on Wednesday nights in front of 15K fans at most. Give these games the stage they deserve.
If the league wants to keep the two-legged format in the conference semifinals and finals, I'm fine with that, but they should shorten the regular season by two weeks so that all those playoff games can be on the weekend. Just play more weekday games in the summer during the regular season to compensate.

Not surprised Portland is winning. The way Dallas finished the season gave me no confidence in them making a run. It's been an alarming trend in the second half of seasons under Oscar Pareja. He's a great talent developer, but his teams seem to lose focus too often.
I hope Dallas gets sold to more ambitious ownership at some point in the future. With their talent pipeline, if they can move closer to the Dallas-FTW metroplex and spend more on some high-end DPs, they can be a special team. Mark Cuban has expressed at maybe buying the team in the future. He likes what he sees in the growth and potential of MLS. Dallas will continue to have a low ceiling if they play in Frisco and stay under Hunt ownership.

Dallas made it interesting at the end, but Portland moves on. Another disappointing end to the season for Dallas.
The Timbers will most likely play Kansas City in the next round, but if RSL pulls the upset tomorrow, they'll play their bitter rivals in Seattle instead.

MLS and USL need to merge and have a pro/rel once all the USL teams can get soccer specific stadiums.

That's a long way off and won't happen until USL introduces pro/rel within itself and proves that it's sustainable.

Well USL pro rel may not be that far off with their new set up. They currently need to get more teams set up for League One.

They need to get those teams set up, as well as give them time to get a somewhat loyal fan base and solid financial footing. They are still quite a few years away.
