Wood-burning fire places are not good for heating a home. They are good for heating the are directly in front of them, but typically induce infiltration which causes all other exterior rooms to get cold.

Thanks to the layout of my house my gas fireplace sucks.
House is 1.5 story so it's open to 2 stories in the living room basically.

I disagree. If done correctly they can heat your entire home much better than gas and don't cost anything to operate (if you have access to the wood). I'm a little bias cause I like cutting firewood almost as much as I love burning it.
