Hey everyone,
Due to recent developments, my wife and I really need to get away for a few days (looking at the first weekend of November) 3/4 days.
Our default trip is Playa Del Carmen (coming from SC, so flights are a little more expensive than what you guys are looking at).
Kinda last minute, so flights are kinda high, so possibly looking at NYC. I've been a couple of times and always enjoyed it.
Wife would want to do a show, but I just don't see the romantic and relaxation of Play del Carmen, any other ideas?

Austin. Spend a couple of days in the city and also out in hill country. Great food. Lots of breweries, wineries, and couple of distilleries. Nice music scene. Beautiful scenery in the hill country.

Miami would be my vote--fly into FLL or MIA. Should be some decent prices since you're already on that side of the country, and good beach weather.
If you're looking for cooler temperatures, hit Boston--or fly into BOS and do a couple days road trip up through NH and Vermont.

Intriguing idea.
I've never been to Miami, but I know the beaches are beautiful. Obviously, amenities are more expensive, but are their options to mimic an AI experience down there (within reason)?

That I'm not sure of, but bet there's plenty of trip adviser material out there to facilitate. I know South Beach has TONS of options, so even if it's not AI, you could pick a hotel right in the middle of South Beach and have access to numerous restaurants and night life within walking distance

Instead of Playa Del Carmen fly into Cancun and get on the ferry to Isla Mujeres. Stay at Hotel Secreto which is a few minutes walk from Playa Norte and Hidalgo Street.
Be amazed at the great food, low prices, friendly locals and Victor the bartender at Hotel Secreto. You'll wonder why you've never been there before and you'll be planning a return trip before you leave.

I love Miami Beach as an option. Easy flight. Cool hotels, restaurants, spas, nightlife and beach. Different enough to be interesting yet still home. Plenty to do for a romantic long weekend.

I have been reading up on this a little. Tell me more.
We've done Playa (El Dorado) at least once a year for last 4 years and find it perfect for a long weekend (3/4 night). We love the AI aspect of it, just because for such a short trip, it makes logistics easier. Admittedly, we don't leave the resort and just lay around all day.
At first, I considered it a luxury. Now, I consider going on one solo trip a year (at least) mandatory for my marriage.

We stay at Hotel Secreto because the service is impeccable and it's a great location. The hotel has a pool and what amounts to a private beach. It's not a beach you can swim in but Playa Norte and calm waters are just a brief walk away.
Hidalgo Street is also a few minutes away. It is loaded with restaurants.
Travel on the island is by taxi or golf cart. A taxi ride anywhere on the island is $5. A golf cart will set you back about $45 per day.
If you go at the right time you can dive or snorkel with whale sharks. You can also golf cart around the island easily in a day and walk the trails at Punta Sur and hit The Joint and Soggy Peso bars on the way back.
The most important thing is eat at Bastos and order the arrachera. It's a little local restaurant in the middle of the island and I don't know what they marinate that hanger steak in but it's fantastic.

Wife and I just returned from aruba and I was pleasantly surprised. locals and staff friendly, felt safe everywhere on the island, everything priced in florins and dollars. we were doing an anniversary trip and stayed five nights. Don't think I would travel there for less than 4 nights. We stayed at a marriot resort but I think there other options for less money. All their beaches are public so easy access to several beaches.
