They co-habitated for a while first and realized it wasn't going to work. Older generations would've gotten married and divorced in these situations.

th03 is right, its the having kids part that matters
If you get divorced young without kids, its like it never happened. If you have kids young without being married/committed, its likely still going to be a fricked up situation

My parents did make us lie when talking to my grandparents about it.
Grandmother would have freaked out had she known we were living together and not married.
