Yeah, but back then there wasn't wide spread internet on cell phones and the TV quality was crap.

And there was nothing to do. Tickets were cheap enough for a working man to bring his family. Plus, most men were masculine back then. Football is a man’s game. Kids aren’t playing football at the playground anymore, because we’re becoming a nation of metrosexuals. This is changing everything - our culture and our politics.
To masculine men, football is their game and capitalism, red in tooth and claw, is what they want. As men become more feminine they want less violent sports, if any at all, and they want the security of socialism more than the opportunity of capitalism. Football and capitalism are going away. It sucks for some of us, but the buttercups have every right to shape their culture just as we shaped ours.

This is probably the real reason more than anything else. Even Bama is reducing their seating capacity. People can watch the games from home, while on the couch, while driving, working, etc. and also don't have to pay the ridiculous concession prices.
True, the corporate side of things has affected the college game atmosphere but ultimately I think it is the simple convenience of technology that has affected most of all.
