Through 3 games, LSU is currently 114th in the country in penalty yards committed at 79 yards/game, and 84th in penalties per game at 7.3/game.

Alternatively, LSU is 12th in the country at benefiting from penalties with 80.3 yards/game and 5th in opponent penalties at 9.7/game.

More interesting to me is the penalties resulting in first downs. 18.8% of LSU's first downs are due to penalties (10/53). That's 2nd in the country.

On the flip side, LSU's defense has allowed 18.2% of first downs due to penalties (10/55), which is 6th in the country.

I don't know if LSU can continue to draw penalties at such a high clip, but surely LSU can clean up the penalties they're committing. Last year penalties were an issue early but they finished respectably in that category.

Our offense is better than opponents were thinking and they’re getting beat and committing penalties.

Maybe so, but it's pretty crazy how eerily similar our penalty stats are both for and against us.

Nice work.

I am happy it doesn't seem to be an overwhelming amount of procedural penalties. Those are fairly easy to clean up, low hanging fruit if you will.

Totally random thought regarding penalties, I absolutely hate what they’re doing with targeting penalties.

I think it’s ridiculous that a player gets ejected after 1 targeting. 15 yard penalty? ... fine. But IMO it should be 2 targets before ejection.

Also, and I realize this would be tough, but intent should be considered on these calls

Team speed, especially at WR is creating penalties against us on offense. Auburn and Miami DBs had their hands on our receivers so often that it was easy for the refs to call it.

One time I swear I saw a ref talking to an Auburn DB in the first quarter that if he held on like that again, a penalty would be called.

Kind of like what Lattimore was doing to Mike Evans week 1.

Nice research.

If LSU can clean up maybe 1/3 to 1/2 of those penalties, while continuing to protect the ball well (turnovers) that would be a good thing going forward.

Interesting point by the OP. Another explanation is that we have had crews that like to call penalties but call them both ways objectively.

It's an interesting tradeoff. The separation for our WRs vs Auburn and Miami wasn't great, but we picked up 6 and 4 first downs via penalty, respectively.

10 first downs picked up via penalty through 3 games is far greater than our usual pace. Since 2012, the most we've picked up in a season is 21, and we've averaged 18 per season over that stretch.

Interesting information there.

I’d like to keep getting “lucky” with calls benefitting us and also clean up some of the nonsense penalties.

So was it for sure Devin White who got flagged for taunting when he did the cam newton Superman after stuffing auburn on fourth down??

Good question. If it was, that was pure bullshite but I didn't see anything else it could have been.

Heard in an interview that it was Divinity going to midfield and making a shotgun motion instead of White’s Superman.

They didn’t show anyone else besides Devin. that was bs if so because it’s not like he was doing that in the auburn guys faces. He ran to our sideline and did it.

That would make a helluva lot more sense. Hope he ran some stadium steps for that if so.
