Fred and Ethel alone made it must see tv
And they too really didn't get along all that well. Vivian Vance (Ethel) was upset that William Frawley (Fred) was picked to play her husband since he was many years older than her.
It was also written in Vance's contract that she had to be so many pounds heavier than Lucille Ball to play her part.
There's a lot of backbiting that went on in many of the sitcoms where everyone looked to be good pals, but really didn't like each other much.
Ed O'Neal couldn't stand Amanda Bearse in "Married With Children". Elanor Donahue, who played "Ellie" the pharmacist on the old "Andy Griffith Show" quit the show when she found she didn't have the chemistry to play Andy's love interest. Also Francis Bauvier who played Aunt Bee was not particularly fond of Griffith and the way he liked to joke around as she though of herself as a serious actress.
