Uh dude, I don't need to "do my history". I was a student athlete at LSU when Dickerson was at SMU and remember the whole SMU-Texas A&M Trans-Am saga. I read about it in a now defunct weekly magazine called The Sporting News. First of all, Dickerson was a can't-miss player and the best RB in the nation and ranked as the best overall player in the nation ahead of players like John Elway and Dan Marino. I had a college teammate that played with Marino in high school that told me that Terry Donahue told Marino he changed his offense if he committed to UCLA. Colleges violating every NCAA bylaw trying to lure recruits was absolutely much worse back then. Back then you rarely had a "commitment announcement", kids rarely flipped or announced decison dates. This bullshite with recruits tweeting their top 5, playing the hat game, posting photos of cash and talking about "the love" that schools show, parachuting out of airplanes or my favorite - Jimmy Clausen showing up in a limousine at the College Football Hall of Fame to announce his committment to Notre Dame - is unquestionably a product of today's technology and media.
